The History of the Bangle

A bangle is a continuous ring of clay, metal, wood, glass, plastic, or resin that is worn on the wrist. It has been around for a very long time.

You read about the discovery of the bangle telling us that it came from Mohenjo-Daro, Pakistan, 5,000 years ago. What is intriguing is that cultures like the Mayan and Incas had bangles too, and as far as we know these cultures never had any contact with civilizations of the ancient world such as the Sumerians, Egyptians, Greeks, or Romans. The ancient Chinese also had bangles. My conclusion is that the bangle; it's shape and use, seems to be a common psychic resonant across humanity.

The bangle is after all a circle. It represents totality, wholeness, the infinite, eternity, re-birth, all cyclic movement. The circle is a physical representation of the self, it has no beginning and no end. As the ultimate curvilinear shape, it embodies all the attributes that attract us: it is safe, gentle, pleasant, graceful, and instills calmness, focus and relaxation.

In modern history the bangle plays an important role. In Hindu weddings where its symbolism is integral to the bride; in some circumstances if the bangle ritual is not performed, the marriage is not truly valid. Every major fashion designer has designed bangles at one time or another for their collections, none more iconic than Coco Chanel. Of course, Cartier has the famous "Love" bangle, once on "never" off. And do we even need to mention the re-discovery of Hermes' enamel masterpieces.

Today, the bangle is as relevant as ever. BuDhaGirl All Weather Bangles® are the modern interpretation of ancient adornment and ritual. AWB® are orbs of polyvinyl carbonate infused with metallic leaves suspended in luxurious organic oil. Each bangle is handcrafted by over 20 artisans.
